Zero Waste Homemade Tortillas
After having homemade tortillas I can never go back to store bought ones. I was always intimidated to make my own because I thought it would be a difficult and messy process, but it’s actually so easy and you only need 4 ingredients.
All of these ingredients can be purchased without plastic. The flour normally comes in paper bags, the oil in glass, and the salt you can buy in glass too or in bulk.
Here’s how to make them!
2 cups of organic all purpose flour (doesn’t have to be organic that’s just what I like to use)
4 tablespoons of olive oil or avocado oil
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1/2 cup of warm water
Add all of the ingredients to a bowl and mix well. I always use my hands because that’s the only way to get everything truly combined. If the dough is too dry, add a splash more of water.
Break the mixture into small sections and roll each section into a ball.
Then one by one, flatten the balls into a thin tortilla shape. You can use a tortilla press if you have one, or just a rolling pin.
Next heat a non stick pan on high. Once the pan is warm, place one tortilla in it.
Cook it for a couple minutes on each side. You’ll know its’s ready to flip when you see some air bubbles and/or it’s slightly browned on the opposite side.
Repeat the process until all of the tortillas are cooked.
After you’re done cooking each one, add it to a plate and immediately cover with a cloth until they’re all made. This helps keep them soft and warm.
Fill with your favourite ingredients (I personally love soy curl tacos, or potato & jackfruit tacos) and enjoy!
