Why I Smoke Weed - My Cannabis Story
Cannabis is something that I only started using regularly within the past year, and I wanted to share my journey with it. There’s still a surprising amount of negative stigma about this plant. Everyone is allowed to have their own opinions of course, and if you’re reading this and you have a negative perception of marijuana, I understand that. I’m not here to change your mind or tell you that you’re wrong.
In this post, I’ll share my cannabis journey, my thoughts on marijuana, why I use it, and more. Cannabis is legal now in Canada, but I’m aware that it’s not in many other countries. This blog post isn’t about me trying to convince you to use cannabis, I’m just sharing my personal story. I always recommend you do your own research.
My Cannabis Journey
Weed is something that I grew up surrounded by. Within my family, exes, and friends. Even though I was always around it, I only used cannabis for the first time when I was 21 (I’m 23 now). I think when I was in high school (and even college), I was just scared to try it on my own.
I like being in control and knowing what I’m doing. When I hung out with someone who was smoking weed and they heard I hadn’t tried it before, they would say something like “oh no don’t do this now you’ll be on all fours!” or something like that. My exes never wanted me to smoke it either. Basically, people just made me believe that I would either be super paranoid or just not in control of my body. So I let that fear stop me from trying weed until a couple years ago.
I first tried marijuana in the form of cannabis infused coconut oil melted in my tea. I took way too much, especially for my first time, and I just didn’t like how I felt. After that, I didn’t do it again for around 2 months because I was like “weed isn’t for me.” Fast forward to November 2017 when I moved into my own place with Shawn that we’re currently renting. I finally had my own private space where I could do whatever I want, whenever I wanted. I felt truly comfortable with my living situation for the first time in my life. Prior to this, I had always been living in shared households, which I’m not a fan of.
When we moved here, I started using cannabis more and truly fell in love with it. My friend here makes cannabis infused coconut oil so I bought a jar off her and started using a teaspoon of that in my teas at night. Then I found out about Herb Approach a few months later and started using cannabis in other forms like distillate, shatter, joints, hash, edible gummies, etc. I currently use shatter the most just because it’s so convenient. So basically, I went from being terrified of smoking weed because of everyone's negativity about it influencing me, to using it daily.
Negativity Surrounding Marijuana
I was listening to a podcast earlier and the hosts randomly started talking about cannabis and their opinions on it. They were saying that if you use cannabis, it makes you a duller, more boring person. That you have a void in your life that you’re trying to fill. That it’s a gateway drug, etc. I completely disagree with all of this. Everyone has a different experience with cannabis. Just because one person has a bad experience with it doesn’t mean everyone else will. Some people literally view marijuana on the same level as cocaine and that’s crazy to me! If you don’t like it, that’s fine. But don’t insult others and view them as lesser than you.
Using Cannabis For Productivity As a Business Owner with Multiple Jobs
When I use cannabis, I am still totally in control of my actions, and I know exactly what I’m doing. I can work, I can cook, I can go for a walk, I can clean the house, I can read, I can exercise, I can do anything that I’d normally do. Some people have this image that if you smoke weed, all you do is lay on the couch eating chips and watching movies. That’s so untrue! If that’s what you normally do in your day-to-day life anyways, yeah, that’s probably what you’re going to do when you’re high.
I always have so much to do and I feel like my to-do list is never ending. I’m a small business owner, and I’m also a customer service representative + social media person for VeganCuts. On top of that, I’m a freelancer so I write various articles and take on new tasks for my clients all the time.
Right now I just took on a project where I need to make 15 recipes in 1 month. Today I also just started a new contract where I’m making 3 recipes a week for a vegan protein powder company. And I also just adopted a new dog who needs lots of special attention and care. I also try to run a Youtube channel, I manage 3 Instagram accounts, I have a blog now, and I am trying to get into doing more collaborations and sponsorships with brands. I work more than most people I know (I always work weekends), and yet I am still able to accomplish everything that I need to do without dying from stress and burnout.
I truly believe that cannabis has helped me with all my daily tasks. In absolutely no way does it ever prevent me from doing what I need to do, and it doesn’t make me lazy. It does the exact opposite - it motivates me to be productive. On days when I have no energy and literally just feel like lying in bed and doing nothing, if I smoke a joint or grab my vape I’m able to get up and do what I need to do.
I know a lot of people that think smoking weed makes you lazy and that you’ll go nowhere in life. Sure, for some people that might be true, but were they even doing anything with their life in the first place before they started using it? You can smoke weed and be successful. You can be an entrepreneur, you can have a job, have a family, take care of yourself, take care of others, and go after your dreams. Smoking a joint isn’t going to stop you from doing that if you are determined enough. If anything, it can help you (just talking from personal experience).
Benefits I’ve Received From Weed
There are so many benefits and medicinal properties of cannabis, and everyone uses it for different things. I think the number one thing it has helped me with is my general mood/depression. Depression is something that I’ve struggled with for 9 years. It used to be so much worse than it is now, and I don’t have week-long bouts of depression anymore. Whenever I’m feeling depressed, marijuana always helps me. It lifts my mood and makes me a happier person. Obviously there are different strains that are better for this than others, but I can’t believe how much of an effect it’s had on my mental health.
All my life I’ve been a super shy person, and everyone who meets me in real life knows this. Although I never talk about it, I do have social anxiety. Cannabis really helps me with this. It’s easier for me to be around people without all the typical feelings of social anxiety I experience like a shaky voice, blushing, trembling, shaky hands, excessive sweating, etc. It helps me be more calm, and actually just yesterday I got an unexpected work call around 6 pm after I literally just smoked a joint and for the first time, my voice didn’t tremble on the phone. I actually sounded enthusiastic on the phone for once, when in the past I’ve been told WAY too many times that I sound monotone and unexcited (it’s just the way I talk, I’m just a super monotone person).
Along with depression and social anxiety, cannabis has helped me with productivity as I mentioned earlier, and most recently, headaches. I’m not sure why, but for the past couple months I’ve been getting headaches pretty regularly :( I think it’s because I’m always on my laptop and that’s probably not good for me. Also I’m not getting any fresh air and I’m being indoors all the time because it’s so cold in Alberta. I usually don’t get headaches in the summer. Anyways, cannabis always helps with my headaches. It also helps me when I get my period, and recently I’ve been taking CBD oil during that time which is super nice for when I want the benefits of cannabis without getting high.
Marijuana has also helped me with my thyroid health, since I have Grave’s disease and I’ve had thyroid issues for the past 6 ish years. Additionally, it helps me with creativity and I always want to paint or do art but I usually have to work so I don’t prioritize it. I haven’t been doing anything creative lately although I want to change that.
Those are only a few ways that cannabis has improved my life these past couple of years, especially these past few months.

I don’t need cannabis to survive. I would be fine without it. It’s not something I need, but it’s something that I enjoy using.
